Sitenotices are displayed above the page title for all users, unless it is superseded by another notice.

The message is displayed if it is defined. 'Defined' means the sitenotice has content more than a single character '-'.

Which notice is displayed for a user is decided in this order:

  1. If the CentralNotice extensionMediawiki logo.svg is enabled, it is displayed (even if not defined); see below.
  2. If the user is anonymous, MediaWiki:Anonnotice is displayed (if defined).
  3. Otherwise, MediaWiki:Sitenotice is displayed (if defined).
  4. Otherwise, the global notice in $wgSiteNoticeMediawiki logo.svg is displayed (if defined).
  5. Otherwise, no notice is displayed.

Use

On Saintapedia, please contact Tom to request

  • There needs to be at least one Saintapedia page linked
  • Campaign should last one (1) to two (2) weeks unless there is a very compelling reason and there is a plan to substantially change the message mid-campaign

Dismissing

Since Extension:DismissableSiteNotice is installed, registered users can hide any site notice by clicking [dismiss] on the notice. For an individual user to recover a previously dismissed site notice, they should delete the cookie dismissSiteNotice for saintapedia.org in their browser.

To show the site notice again, even for those who have dismissed it, sysops should increment the number in MediaWiki:Sitenotice id (this redisplays the notice for everyone regardless of whether the actual notice has been edited or not).

Requesting a site notice

To request a requesting a site notice, please contact Tom. Please keep in mind that:

  • Notices should only be placed for one week. Two weeks can be allowed in special circumstances.
  • If possible, there should be time when no notice are displayed to reduce ad fatigue[1] (people's stop seeing it).
  • The default should be no Site Notice

Types

Which notice is displayed for a user is decided in this order:

  2. Otherwise, MediaWiki:Sitenotice is displayed (if defined).
  3. Otherwise, no notice is displayed.
