History

St. John Neumann Catholic Parish in Irvine, California, was formally established as a parish community on December 1, 1978, by Bishop William Johnson of the Diocese of Orange. Named after St. John Neumann, the first male canonized saint from the United States, the parish reflects a connection to American Catholic heritage, following the naming of Irvine’s first parish, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, after the country’s first native saint. Father Colm Conlon was appointed as the inaugural pastor. Initially, Masses were held in borrowed spaces, including the gymnasium of Irvine High School and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Groundbreaking for the permanent church occurred on June 15, 1980, and the first Mass in the new building was celebrated on November 8, 1981. Over the decades, the parish has grown into a vibrant community, emphasizing youth ministry, multicultural worship, and spiritual formation within the Diocese of Orange.

Special features

  • The parish offers a Cantonese Bilingual Mass, with events like the one scheduled for February 15, 2025, at 7:00 pm, reflecting its outreach to diverse linguistic communities.
  • A special Mass for the World Day of the Sick and the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, such as the one held on February 12, 2025, at 6:00 pm, highlights its focus on healing and devotion.
