History

St. Ambrose Church was founded in 1908 in Chaffee, Missouri, following the town’s establishment in 1905 along the St. Louis and Memphis Branch of the Frisco Railroad System.[1][2] Early Catholic settlers petitioned Archbishop Glennon of St. Louis for a resident priest in 1906, and on the Feast of the Holy Family in 1907, Fr. Frank Feeley, CM, celebrated the first Mass in Byrds Hall.[2] Fr. Anthony H. Rohling, appointed as the first resident pastor, oversaw the construction of a frame church, completed in January 1908.[2] St. Ambrose School was established soon after, staffed by the Sisters of Mercy until 1971, though it faced opposition from the Ku Klux Klan, which was countered by Fr. John J. Lonnergan’s advocacy for Christian principles.[2]

A fire destroyed the church on April 12, 1942, leading to the use of the school basement as a temporary worship space during wartime.[2] A new church was completed and dedicated on July 4, 1954, under Archbishop Joseph Ritter.[2] In 1983, a new school and parish center were built, with an additional classroom and library added in 2000.[2] Today, under Rev. Joseph Kelly, the parish continues to thrive, offering robust faith formation, community events, and digital engagement.[3][4]
