History
St. Ambrose Church was founded in 1961 to serve the growing Catholic population in Houston’s Oak Forest neighborhood, during a period of suburban expansion in the Greater Houston area. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston established the parish to meet the spiritual needs of the Northwest Deanery, naming it after Saint Ambrose, a Doctor of the Church known for his eloquence and contributions to liturgy. The parish’s early years focused on constructing the church and establishing Saint Ambrose Catholic School and the Early Childhood Center to provide Catholic education for children from six weeks to eighth grade.[1][2]
Over the decades, St. Ambrose has developed a strong bilingual ministry, offering Masses in English and Spanish, such as Sunday services at 12:00 PM in Spanish and a youth Mass at 4:00 PM, with live-streaming available on Facebook to reach a wider audience.[3] The parish provides Eucharistic adoration on weekdays, with extended hours on the first Friday of each month, and confession opportunities multiple times a week.[3] Community engagement is fostered through ministries and events, as highlighted in weekly bulletins and the parish’s active social media presence.[4]
