The '''Archdiocese of Newark''', a metropolitan [[archdiocese]] of the [[Latin Rite]], is an active archdiocese encompassing Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties in northern [[New Jersey]] in the [[United States]]. Erected as the Diocese of Newark on 29 July 1853 by [[Pope Pius IX]] and elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese on 10 December 1937, it is currently led by Cardinal Joseph W.
