== History == | == History == | ||
Our Lady of the Assumption was established in 1951 by Archbishop Gerald P. O’Hara of the then Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta. The parish began with Masses held in a converted Army barracks near what would become DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. The first permanent structure on the seven and a half acres purchased in Brookhaven was a school-chapel building, dedicated in 1952, with the Sisters of Mercy teaching at the school. The Marist Fathers and Brothers took over pastoral care in 1965, following a request from Archbishop John Hallinan. Significant expansions and renovations have marked the parish's history, including the dedication of a new sanctuary in 2005 by Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory. The parish has been a cornerstone of Catholic education and community in Atlanta, with its school, Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School, earning recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School twice.<ref name="archatl_ola">Our Lady of the Assumption, Brookhaven | Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta | Atlanta, GA - archatl.com.
