Pope Saint Cletus, a 1st-century Roman, was the third pope, succeeding Saint Linus and preceding Saint Clement I, traditionally reigning from around 79 to 92 AD. Born in Rome—possibly of Greek descent—he was ordained by Saint Peter, per early tradition, and led the nascent Church during Nero and Domitian’s persecutions. Little is historically certain, but the *Liber Pontificalis* credits him with establishing 25 presbyters (priests) and building a shrine over Peter’s tomb. Martyred around 92 AD, likely beheaded under Domitian, he died a witness to the faith, his papacy a bridge in apostolic succession. | Pope Saint Cletus, a 1st-century Roman, was the third pope, succeeding Saint Linus and preceding Saint Clement I, traditionally reigning from around 79 to 92 AD.
