History

Saint Rose of Lima Parish in York, Pennsylvania, was established in 1926 to serve the Catholic community in the western part of York. The parish was named after Saint Rose of Lima, the first canonized saint of the Americas, known for her devotion to the poor and her life of penance. The founding of the parish was part of the Catholic Church's response to the growing Catholic population in York, especially those of Italian descent who had settled in the area.[1]

The first church building was constructed in 1927, with Monsignor John F. O'Hara, later to become Bishop of Buffalo and Cardinal, laying the cornerstone. Over the years, Saint Rose of Lima has seen expansions and renovations, including the construction of a new church in 1996, which provided a larger and more modern worship space for the community.[2]

Saint Rose of Lima School was established in 1950, offering Catholic education from Pre-K through 8th grade. The school has been a central part of the parish's mission, focusing on both academic and spiritual development, embodying the parish's commitment to education and faith formation.[3]

The parish has been known for its community involvement, including hosting events like the annual parish festival and engaging in various ministries that address the needs of both the parishioners and the broader York community. Saint Rose of Lima also maintains a strong liturgical life, with regular Masses, confessions, and other devotional practices.[4]

In 2016, the parish celebrated the installation of Father Paul Fisher as Pastor, marking a new chapter in its history with a focus on community outreach, spiritual growth, and educational initiatives. Saint Rose of Lima continues to be a vibrant center of Catholic life in York, reflecting the spirit of its patron saint through its service and dedication to the community.[5]
