History

Saint Philip the Apostle Parish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was established on May 11, 1965, by Bishop George L. Leech to serve the Catholic community in the Millersville area. The parish was named after Saint Philip the Apostle, reflecting the community's commitment to spreading the faith as Philip did in the early Church. The name was also chosen to honor Bishop Philip R. McDevitt, the predecessor of Bishop Leech.[1]

The first Mass was celebrated in the Manor Shopping Center auditorium due to overcrowding at Saint Joseph's Church in Lancaster. These services began on February 16, 1964, and continued until the current church on Millersville Pike was completed. The new church was dedicated by Bishop Leech on October 18, 1965, marking the official start of Saint Philip's as an independent parish.[2]

Over the years, Saint Philip the Apostle has grown, with Father William Eline appointed as the first pastor. The parish has seen various expansions to accommodate its congregation, including the addition of a rectory, social hall, and improvements to the church itself. In 1984, the church's clear glass windows were replaced with stained glass windows depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary.[3]

The parish does not operate its own school but has a strong focus on religious education, offering comprehensive programs for children and adults. Saint Philip's has been known for its community involvement, including hosting various parish activities, social events, and ministries that cater to both spiritual and social needs.[4]

Saint Philip's continues to be a vibrant part of Lancaster's Catholic community, with a mission to foster faith, community, and service, reflecting the principles of its patron saint through active participation in the life of the diocese and local area.[5]
