History
Saint Peter Son Korean Catholic Community in Enola, Pennsylvania, was established in 1989 within the Diocese of Harrisburg to serve the growing Korean Catholic population in the area. The community is named after Saint Peter Son, a Korean martyr who was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1984, symbolizing the deep roots of Catholicism in Korean culture and history. The establishment of this community reflects the increasing presence of Korean Americans in central Pennsylvania, seeking to maintain their cultural and religious identity.[1]
The community holds its services at the former Summerdale Alliance Church building, which was officially opened as the Korean Catholic Church in 2012, marking a significant milestone for the parish. This event was celebrated with a dedication by two bishops, one from the Harrisburg Diocese and one from the Diocese of Jeonju, South Korea, showcasing the international connections within the Catholic Church.[2]
Saint Peter Son Korean Catholic Community does not have its own parish school but focuses on religious education tailored to the Korean Catholic community, with Masses conducted in Korean. It serves as an apostolate of the Diocese of Harrisburg, meaning it is supported by the diocese while maintaining a unique cultural and linguistic identity. The community has about 250 members from several midstate counties, providing a cultural and spiritual home for Korean Catholics.[3]
The parish's mission is to provide a place where Korean Catholics can celebrate their faith in their native language, fostering a sense of community and continuity with their heritage. It also plays a role in integrating Korean Catholics into the broader Catholic community in the Harrisburg Diocese, encouraging participation in diocesan events while preserving Korean Catholic traditions.[4]
