History
St. Patrick’s Parish in Sauteurs, Grenada, was established around 1790, making it one of the oldest Catholic parishes on the island. Its founding is linked to the French colonial period, during which Catholicism was the dominant religion in Grenada before British control in 1783. The parish church, located in the town of Sauteurs in the northern parish of St. Patrick, was built to serve the local Catholic community, including French settlers and enslaved Africans who were evangelized by missionaries. The current stone structure dates to the early 19th century, with renovations occurring over time to preserve its historical character. The parish gained significance in 1983 when it hosted memorial services following the U.S. invasion of Grenada, reflecting its role as a community anchor during times of crisis. Today, St. Patrick’s remains a vibrant part of the Diocese of St. George’s in Grenada, which was established as a diocese in 1956, and continues to serve both residents and visitors drawn to its historical and spiritual legacy.
