History
Saint Matthew Parish in Dauphin, Pennsylvania, was established in 1968 under the Diocese of Harrisburg. The parish's formation was part of the diocese's efforts to expand its presence in response to the growing Catholic population in the area. The initial organization of the parish was spearheaded by Father Daniel Menniti, who suggested the name St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, which was approved by Bishop George Leech. The first Mass was celebrated by Bishop Leech on March 31, 1968, marking the official establishment of the parish.[1]
The church building on Stoney Creek Drive was once part of the Presbyterian Church in Dauphin, which was purchased in 1968. This acquisition included a historic bell from 1849, which was restored and has become a symbol of the parish's heritage. The church has since been a place of worship, community gathering, and spiritual growth for Catholics in Dauphin and surrounding areas.[2]
Saint Matthew does not operate its own school but supports religious education through programs aimed at all ages, ensuring the continuity of Catholic faith education. The parish is known for its community involvement, including social events, religious celebrations, and various ministries that cater to the needs of its parishioners and the broader community.[3]
The parish's location along Stoney Creek provides a tranquil setting for reflection and community activities. The church and its grounds have been used for various parish functions, including festivals and seasonal celebrations, which strengthen community bonds.[4]
Saint Matthew Parish in Dauphin continues to serve as a spiritual home for its members, offering regular Masses, sacraments, and community service in the spirit of its patron saint, emphasizing evangelization and community outreach.[5]
