History
Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was established on March 1, 1948, by Bishop George L. Leech to address the spiritual needs of the growing Catholic population in the area. The parish was named after Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, known for her visions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and her promotion of devotion to it. The first Mass was celebrated on March 7, 1948, in a local automobile showroom, showcasing the parish's humble beginnings before moving to a dedicated church space.[1]
The original church was built on Herr Street and served the community until a new church was constructed on Paxton Church Road in Susquehanna Township, reflecting the parish's growth and the need for a larger facility. This new church was dedicated in 2009, designed to accommodate the increasing number of parishioners and provide an environment conducive to both worship and community activities.[2]
Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque Catholic School was founded in 1949, operated by the School Sisters of Notre Dame until 1985, and then by diocesan staff. The school educates students from Pre-K through 8th grade, emphasizing both academic excellence and faith formation, embodying the parish's commitment to Catholic education.[3]
The parish has been under the leadership of various pastors, including the Oblates of Mary Immaculate from 1970 to 1995, before returning to diocesan priests. Saint Margaret Mary is active in community service, hosting events like the parish festival, and engaging in ministries that serve both the spiritual and social needs of its members and the wider community.[4]
The parish's dedication to the Sacred Heart devotion is evident in its liturgical life, with special First Friday devotions that honor Saint Margaret Mary's visions. This parish continues to be a vibrant part of Harrisburg's Catholic community, offering a place for worship, education, and service in the spirit of its patron saint.[5]
