History

Saint Joseph the Worker Parish in Bonneauville, Pennsylvania, was established in 1859, making it one of the older Catholic parishes within the Diocese of Harrisburg. Originally known as Saint Joseph's, the parish was founded to serve the Catholic community in this rural area of Adams County. The parish's early days were marked by the dedication of the church by Bishop John Neumann of Philadelphia, later canonized as a saint, on July 31, 1859.[1]

The parish's name was changed to Saint Joseph the Worker in 1960, reflecting the devotion to Saint Joseph under this particular title, which was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955 to honor workers. This name change symbolized the community's connection to labor and the rural lifestyle prevalent in Bonneauville, as many parishioners worked in agriculture or related trades.[2]

Over the years, the parish has seen various pastoral changes, with Father Augusty Thankachan, M.SS.CC., being installed as pastor in 2011, indicating the involvement of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts in its pastoral care. The parish has maintained a strong commitment to its faith community, offering regular services, sacraments, and community events tailored to the needs of its members.[3]

Saint Joseph the Worker does not operate its own school but supports religious education through parish programs. The church has been a center for spiritual activities, including Eucharistic adoration, confessions, and community service, reflecting the parish's dedication to both spiritual growth and community service in the spirit of Saint Joseph.[4]

The parish celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2009, highlighting its long history and the generations of faithful who have contributed to its legacy. Saint Joseph the Worker remains a vital part of Bonneauville's religious and social fabric, continuing to offer worship, community support, and a place for spiritual nourishment.[5]
