History

Saint Joseph Parish in Danville, Pennsylvania, was established in 1848, making it one of the oldest Catholic parishes in the Diocese of Harrisburg. The parish's beginnings are linked to the missionary efforts of early priests, including Saint John Neumann, who visited to celebrate Mass for the small Catholic community in the area. The first recorded Mass in Danville was in 1806, but it wasn't until 1848 that the parish was officially formed under the care of the Diocese of Philadelphia, prior to the establishment of the Diocese of Harrisburg in 1868.[1]

The original church was built on the corner of Center and Pine Streets, with a new parochial school added in 1906 to the rear of the church. The current church was dedicated in 1880 by a Jesuit Father, and upon his death, the parish was handed over to the Diocese of Harrisburg. Subsequent pastors have contributed to the parish's growth, including Father James A. Huber, who served until his death in 1940. The venerable church, serving the community for over eighty years, was declared unsafe and razed in 1963, with services temporarily held in the school auditorium until a new church was built in 1975.[2]

Saint Joseph Catholic School has been a significant part of the parish, providing education from Pre-K to 8th grade, emphasizing both academic and spiritual growth. The school has a long history of serving the community's educational needs, fostering a faith-based learning environment.[3]

The parish has seen various expansions, including the construction of the Monsignor Gribbin Parish Center in 1996, which houses a gymnasium, social hall, meeting rooms, and classrooms. Saint Joseph Parish is active in community life, hosting events like the annual Diocesan Annual Campaign and supporting local ministries and outreach programs.[4]

The parish also commemorates the history of Saint Hubert's Church, which served German Catholics in Danville, and Saint James Mission in Exchange, both now part of Saint Joseph Parish, with a chapel and annex named in their honor. This reflects the parish's effort to preserve its historical and cultural heritage.[5]
