History

Saint Anne and Our Lady of La Vang Parish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was originally established as Saint Anne Parish in 1923. The parish was founded to serve the Catholic community in the northern part of Lancaster City, following a petition by 200 local Catholics for a new church. The first Mass was celebrated by Bishop Philip R. McDevitt on December 16, 1923, in what was then the convent chapel, now the Parish Library.[1]

The parish has had a rich history of community involvement, including the blessing of automobiles during the Feast of St. Christopher in the 1950s and hosting Vietnamese refugees in 1975 after the fall of Saigon, which marked the beginning of a significant Vietnamese community within the parish. This community was officially recognized in 2022 when the parish was renamed to include "Our Lady of La Vang," reflecting its commitment to the Vietnamese Catholic community in Lancaster.[2]

The church building saw multiple expansions and renovations over the years, including a significant renovation in 2002 under the guidance of Rev. Gerald Lytle, which included updates to the worship space. The parish school, Saint Anne School, operated for many years but closed in 2020, with students transferring to Saint John Neumann School.[3]

The parish is known for its diverse community, offering Mass in both English and Vietnamese, and engaging in various cultural and social activities that reflect its multicultural congregation. Saint Anne and Our Lady of La Vang continue to serve as a spiritual and communal hub, providing liturgical services, religious education, and community outreach in Lancaster.[4]
