Saint Ambrose of Milan (c. 340–397), Bishop of Milan from 374, is a Doctor of the Church whose theological and pastoral leadership shaped early Christianity in Italy. A former Roman governor, he influenced St. Augustine’s conversion and confronted Emperor Theodosius I over moral failings. His development of the Ambrosian Rite, still used in Milan, distinguishes the archdiocese’s liturgy. Canonized soon after his death, Ambrose’s legacy endures in Italy’s 85% Catholic population (50 million) as a model of faith and civic engagement.
