History
Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and the Vietnamese Martyrs Parish in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has a rich history that reflects the changing demographics and cultural diversity of the Catholic community in the city. Originally established in 1906 as St. Mary's, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, the parish served the Catholic population in west Harrisburg. It was initially a mission of the Cathedral Parish of St. Patrick, reflecting the growth of Catholicism in the area.[1]
Over the years, the parish has undergone several name changes and expansions. In the early 20th century, it moved from its initial location at Fifth, Maclay, and Atlas Streets to its current site at Third and Woodbine Streets, where ground was broken for the new church in 1928. The building was dedicated in 1929, showcasing English Gothic architecture.[2]
In recent decades, the parish has embraced the Vietnamese Catholic community, leading to its current name, recognizing the Vietnamese Martyrs alongside Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. This change reflects the parish's commitment to multiculturalism and its role in integrating Vietnamese immigrants into the broader Catholic community of Harrisburg. The parish now offers Mass in both English and Vietnamese, catering to a diverse congregation.[3]
The parish is known for its community activities, including food pantries, religious education, and various cultural events that celebrate both the traditional and multicultural aspects of its congregation. Despite not having its own school, the parish supports religious education through programs focused on catechesis and community involvement.[4]
