History

Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in New Holland, Pennsylvania, was established in 1940 to serve the Catholic community in this part of Lancaster County. The parish began as a mission under the guidance of Father Lawrence Jung, C.SS.R., with its first Mass celebrated on Christmas Day in 1940 in a small chapel. The land for the chapel was donated by the Storb family, reflecting early community support for the Catholic presence in New Holland.[1]

The parish became independent in 1977, no longer considered a mission but a full parish within the Diocese of Harrisburg. This transition was marked by the construction of a new church on a different site on Water Street, which began in 1971 and was completed by September 1972. The growth of the parish mirrored the development of the local community, including the influence of the New Holland Machine Company, later part of Sperry Corporation, which brought more families to the area.[2]

Our Lady of Lourdes has been a place for spiritual growth and community involvement, hosting various events like the annual parish picnic, and offering religious education and liturgical services. The parish does not operate a school but focuses on parish life through numerous ministries and community outreach programs.[3]

The parish has seen several pastoral changes, with each pastor contributing to its development, including enhancements to the church's physical and spiritual infrastructure. Our Lady of Lourdes continues to be a vibrant part of New Holland, providing a place for worship, community, and service.[4]
