History

Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church was established in 2002 to serve the rapidly growing Hispanic Catholic population in west Charlotte. The church was initially a response to the cultural and spiritual needs of immigrants from Latin America, offering services conducted entirely in Spanish. Father Vicente Finnerty often credits the community's support through the sale of traditional Mexican foods like tacos and tamales as instrumental in the church's development. The church is housed in what was initially a steel prefab warehouse, which has been transformed with a Mexican adobe-style front to reflect its cultural heritage.[1]

Special features

  • The parish is renowned for its cultural inclusivity, primarily serving a Spanish-speaking congregation with all Masses in Spanish.
  • There's a vibrant "Patio" area where community members gather for food and fellowship, reminiscent of traditional Mexican gatherings.
  • The church features a notable celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which attracts thousands of participants from across the region.
  • The parish actively engages in social outreach, focusing on immigration issues, education, and support for the Hispanic community in Charlotte.
