History
Our Lady of Fatima Mission in Jonestown, Pennsylvania, was established in 1953 under the leadership of Monsignor Paul D. Weaver as a response to the growing Catholic population in northern Lebanon County. The mission was part of the broader expansion efforts by the Diocese of Harrisburg to cater to the spiritual needs of Catholics in less urbanized areas. Initially, it was under the pastoral care of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Lebanon, reflecting the Diocese's strategy to manage smaller communities through larger, established parishes.[1]
The mission's establishment coincided with the post-World War II baby boom and subsequent population growth in suburban and rural areas, leading to an increase in the Catholic community in Jonestown. Our Lady of Fatima Mission has served as a place of worship, community gathering, and spiritual education for this community. The mission church is known for its dedication to the message of Our Lady of Fatima, emphasizing prayer, repentance, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.[2]
Despite not operating a parish school, Our Lady of Fatima Mission provides religious education through programs like CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine), focusing on the spiritual formation of the youth.
