History

Our Lady of Fatima Chapel was established in 1954 to cater to a significant influx of Western Electric employees who moved from New Jersey to Winston-Salem. Originally, the chapel was housed in a small gray brick building, which was once the city's first public library built in the early 1900s. The parish has since seen an increase in diversity, particularly with the growth of the Hispanic community in the 1990s, leading to a multicultural congregation today.[1]

Special features

  • The chapel's location in downtown Winston-Salem makes it a central point for Catholic worship in the city.
  • Our Lady of Fatima serves a diverse community, offering Mass in English, which has been particularly important for the integration of new parishioners from various backgrounds.
  • The building itself retains some architectural features from its days as a public library, adding historical significance to the church.
  • The parish is known for its community engagement, particularly through its social justice initiatives and support for the local Hispanic community.
