History

Immaculate Conception Parish, located in New Oxford, Pennsylvania, was established in 1852. Initially, a larger tract of land along Carlisle Street was donated, and a frame church was erected to serve as a place for religious instruction, weekday Mass, and certain Holy Days. The parish started as a mission of Sacred Heart in Conewago, with Jesuit priests traveling to celebrate Mass. In 1879, New Oxford and Paradise missions were combined, with Mass celebrated on alternate Sundays. The first resident pastor, Father Pius P. Hemler, was appointed in 1891, and under his leadership, the parish built a brick schoolhouse.[1]

The current church building's plans were drawn in the late 19th century, with the old church being razed in 1900. Bishop John W. Shanahan laid the cornerstone for the new church in 1901, and it was dedicated later that year. Since then, the parish has grown, serving over 500 families. The parish school was closed in 2017 when it merged with other local Catholic schools to form Saint Teresa of Calcutta School.[2]

The parish is known for its active community life, including various devotions like the First Friday and First Saturday devotions, where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration, and confessions are available. The parish also holds bilingual Masses, reflecting the diversity of its congregation.[3]

Immaculate Conception has maintained a strong tradition of community service and outreach, being a vital part of New Oxford's religious and social fabric for over 170 years.[4]
