History
Holy Mary of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Healy, Alaska, was established in 1982. The church was built under the guidance of Fr. Paul Mueller, S.J., who was tasked with both the construction and financing of the project. Generous donations from the Catholic Extension Society and Jesuit Mission Associates, along with volunteer labor, made the completion of the church complex possible. Initially named "Our Lady of the Mountain," it was later renamed to Holy Mary of Guadalupe in honor of a promise made by Fr. Mueller after visiting the Shrine to Holy Mary of Guadalupe in Guadalajara, Mexico. The church serves the communities of Healy, Ferry, and Denali, offering services year-round with special summer schedules.[1][2]
Special features
- Cultural Devotion: The church is named after Our Lady of Guadalupe, reflecting a significant devotion among Mexican and Latin American communities, symbolizing the unity of Indigenous and European heritage.
- Community Service: It serves a wide area including Denali National Park, with special summer services offered to accommodate both residents and tourists.
- Architectural Design: The church was designed by Mr. Ron Kunkel, a former Jesuit Volunteer, to serve as a space for fellowship and worship, with a rectory built adjacent to it.
