History

The Heritage Center of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, often referred to simply as the Heritage Center, is located in Crawfordville, Georgia, within the Archdiocese of Atlanta. It was established in 2017 as a revitalized site to honor the history of Catholicism in Georgia, specifically tied to the Church of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which has roots back to 1790, making it the oldest Catholic Church in the state.

The transformation into the Heritage Center came after the church was downgraded to station status in 2001 due to a decline in local Catholic population. The center now serves multiple purposes, including hosting historical tours, retreats, and spiritual renewal programs. It encompasses the historic church, the oldest Catholic cemetery in Georgia (Locust Grove Cemetery), and additional facilities aimed at preserving and sharing the Catholic heritage of the area. The center operates under a unique public/private partnership, using private funds for new constructions and public donations for conservation and sacred art preservation.[1][2]
