Federal Employee Emergency Medical Evacuation and Travel Assistance
All DOE federal employees who travel officially more than 100 miles outside their residences are eligible for emergency medical evacuation and travel assistance. Effective on April 11, 2024, DOE has assigned JET-ICU with providing all DOE/NNSA federal employees with emergency medical evacuation and travel assistance services as described below. In addition, covered employees may request a travel risk assessment/pre-brief of your destination, especially if to a high-risk area, via completion of a form. Federal employees should complete the easy one-time registration and carry the JET-ICU membership card and/or save on their devices as included in the one-page information sheet below. All travelers should be aware of the coverage provided through their own personal health insurance policies and those covered through any employer travel assistance/insurance programs and plan accordingly with any supplemental coverage according to individual circumstances/needs.
Emergency Medical Assistance Services
- 24/7 assistance for medical emergencies while officially traveling.
- Ensure unlimited insurance provided for unlimited amount of trips/travel with no membership plan restriction.
- No requirement for deductibles, co-pays, out-of-pocket expenses, physical examination, nor claims/reimbursement forms.
- Worldwide medical referrals for unforeseen medical situations.
- Guarantee of hospital admittance and medical case management.
- Facilitation of hospital payment (Departmental element must advance funds).
- Close coordination with DOE Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
- Transfer of insurance information to medical providers with guarantee of medical fees and expenses.
- Dispatch an appropriate medical practitioner to the employee, if needed.
- Coordinate the transfer of medical information and records with authorization.
- Provide updates to DOE EOC and physician with authorization.
- Assist in documentation for medical insurance claims (under traveler’s personal insurance) and referrals related to medical evacuations.
Medical Evacuation/Repatriation Services
- Upon review of current medical reports, the JET ICU Emergency Medical Department will assess whether medical evacuation is necessary and which level of medical transportation is most suitable for the patient.
- Coordinate and pay for a medically supervised emergency evacuation if adequate medical facilities are not available.
- Provide appropriate level of emergency medical transportation including Commercial Medical Escorts and Air Ambulance evacuations with ground transportation arrangements on both ends.
- Assist in repatriation of a member’s spouse, dependent children, or a travel companion.
- Transport and repatriation of any/all mortal remains.
Travel Assistance Services
- Provide visa, passport, and vaccination requirements; cultural information; general temperature and weather trends; embassy and consular information; travel advisories; and country profiles.
- Overall risk level, security risk level, Covid-19 risk level, emergency numbers, and recent incident information.
- Provide translation assistance with options for remote and in-person interpretation.
- In the event of a medical emergency and evacuation, guaranteed return of all vehicles utilized by DOE members.
- Provide patient specific emergency communications with authorized parties.
Travel Risk Assessment/Pre-Brief Services
Federal employees may request a travel risk assessment/pre-brief especially if traveling to a high-risk area. Utilize the Request for Travel Pre-Brief attachment. An example of a report generated by Jet ICU may be found under attachment Pre-Travel Brief Example – Ukraine.

Registration will be done on a one-time basis where the traveler will minimally provide name (as it appears on passport/government issued identification) and organizational routing number.
Please note, these services for medical evacuation coverage and insurance are limited to DOE and NNSA federal employees who are traveling outside of the country or 100+ miles away from permanent residence in home country. The company code for these employees is: DOE911.
