Advanced Metering Infrastructure
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is different from traditional utility investments. It has forward looking benefits whose value depends on how it is deployed and implemented. It can enable new opportunities, allow for more customer options, respond to customer expectations to manage and generate their own electricity, and provide data to maintain and improve the operation of the distribution system.
The AIM in Review report was prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy by E9 Insights and Plugged in Strategies under contract 0025912.01.2432.107.001.021 subcontract 5000-190-003 and UT Battelle LLC under contract No. DE-AC05-00OR22725, in conjunction with Arara Blue Energy Group LLC and BCS LLC under Subcontract: 4000179425.
Electric distribution system
The electric distribution system (EDS) in the U.S. is in a state of transition as the grid is modernized and consumers have more control over their energy usage. Utilities are proposing – and regulators are having to evaluate – a new class of “next generation technologies” that are not a one-for-one replacement for aging infrastructure. For the regulator, this can create challenges.
For more details, see A System in Transition - The Influence of Next Generation Technologies (May 2022) that was prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Grid Research and Development Division by E9 Insights and Plugged In Strategies under Subcontract 5000-190-002 together with Arara Blue Energy Group LLC under contract DE-AC05-00OR22727 Subcontract 4000179425 and BCS LLC under contract to UT Battelle LLC Contract DE-AC05-00OR22727.
