History

Divine Redeemer Catholic Church in Boonville, North Carolina, was established to serve the American/Hispanic community in Surry and Yadkin counties. Plans for the church began around 2000, with the goal of providing a place of worship that would be welcoming to the predominantly Hispanic parishioners, many of whom are from Mexico. The church was designed with cultural sensitivity, featuring stucco walls and a red tile roof reminiscent of Mexican architecture. The new facility, which included worship, educational, and gathering spaces, was completed in January 2003, with Father Fidel Melo as the first pastor. The church was named "Divino Redentor" (Divine Redeemer) to resonate with the Hispanic population.[1][2]
