History

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, commonly known as Conewago Chapel, located in Hanover, Pennsylvania, is one of the oldest Catholic parishes in the United States, with its roots tracing back to 1730. Initially established as a mission post by English Jesuits, it was named St. Mary of the Assumption in 1741.[1]

The current stone structure, which replaced a log chapel, was built between 1785 and 1787 under the leadership of Jesuit Father James Pellentz, becoming the first church in the United States dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This dedication was significant as it reflected a popular Jesuit devotion at the time.[2]

The church underwent significant expansion and decoration in the 19th century, with notable frescoes and artworks added, including those by Austrian artist Franz Stecker. In 1851, the church was enlarged, and additional liturgical art was introduced, enhancing its Baroque-revival interior.[3]

In 1962, Pope John XXIII elevated the church to the rank of a minor basilica, recognizing its historical, artistic, and spiritual significance. This basilica is unique for its age and as a center of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in America.[4]

While the parish once had an associated school, Sacred Heart of Jesus School closed in 2017. However, the Basilica continues to be a focal point for Catholic worship and heritage, offering various ministries and maintaining its active role within the community.[5]
