History

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Atlanta was originally established in 1880 as the parish of Saints Peter and Paul. Due to the commercial development around its initial location, the parish decided to move and build a new church further from the business district. In 1897, the current church was designed by Atlanta architect W.T. Downing in a style primarily French Romanesque. The church was renamed to reflect the growing devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and was dedicated on May 1, 1898. It was elevated to the status of a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, recognizing its historical, architectural, and liturgical significance. The basilica has since been a significant place of worship, noted for its beautiful architecture, including 28 stained glass windows from Mayer Studios in Munich, and its role in the community and the broader Catholic Church.[1][2]
