History

The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in McSherrystown, Pennsylvania, holds a rich historical background starting from the late 19th century. Initially, McSherrystown's Catholic community was part of the expansive Conewago parish. The growth of the local population, particularly after the Civil War due to the cigar industry, necessitated the establishment of a local church.[1]

In 1890, with the Jesuits' guidance, groundwork for Holy Trinity Church began, but it was deemed too small and poorly located for the expanding community. The Jesuits transferred the church to the Diocese of Harrisburg in 1901, and by 1903, the original structure was torn down. The current church, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was constructed to meet the needs of the growing Catholic population in McSherrystown.[2]

The parish has had various pastoral changes over the years and initially supported a parochial school which was destroyed by fire in 1938 but rebuilt. However, educational facilities associated with the parish have since seen significant changes, including mergers with other local Catholic schools.[3]

Today, Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish continues to serve its community with a focus on spiritual nourishment, community service, and maintaining the cultural and religious heritage of the area.[4]
