History

Saint Rose of Lima Parish in York, Pennsylvania, was established in 1926 to serve the Catholic community in the western part of York. The parish was named after Saint Rose of Lima, the first canonized saint of the Americas, known for her devotion to the poor and her life of penance. The founding of the parish was part of the Catholic Church's response to the growing Catholic population in York, especially those of Italian descent who had settled in the area.[1]

The first church building was constructed in 1927, with Monsignor John F. O'Hara, later to become Bishop of Buffalo and Cardinal, laying the cornerstone.
