History

St. Ambrose Church was founded in 1904 to serve the Catholic population in Baltimore’s Park Heights neighborhood, during a period of urban growth and immigration in Maryland. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, the oldest diocese in the United States, established the parish to meet the spiritual needs of the Park Heights Deanery. Named after Saint Ambrose, a Doctor of the Church known for his eloquence and contributions to liturgy, the parish focused on building a church and fostering community life through worship and outreach.[1]

Over the years, St. Ambrose has developed a range of ministries to support its diverse congregation, including a religious education program for children and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) led by Sister Rita Bueche, SSND.[1][2] The parish supports the Friends of the Shrine of Saints Peter and Paul, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving a historic shrine, and promotes fellowship through events like coffee and donuts after Mass.[1] The women’s ministry, highlighted by initiatives like the sale of ministry T-shirts, fosters unity and service among parishioners.[1] Weekly prayer requests and Eucharistic adoration further enhance the parish’s spiritual offerings.[1]
