History

Saint Leo the Great Parish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was established in 1964 by Bishop George L. Leech, making it a relatively young parish within the Diocese of Harrisburg. The parish was created to serve the burgeoning Catholic community in the southwest part of Lancaster, with its first Mass celebrated on February 22, 1964. The early Masses were held in a barn on the Rohrerstown estate, reflecting the humble beginnings of the parish.[1]

The current church building was dedicated in November 1991, signifying the parish's growth and commitment to serving its community. The architecture of the church reflects both modern functionality and reverence for traditional Catholic worship spaces. The parish has seen significant pastoral leadership transitions, with Rev. Peter I. Hahn serving as pastor, contributing to its development and community involvement.[2]

Saint Leo the Great Catholic School was established to provide Catholic education from Pre-K through 8th grade, emphasizing a faith-based education that promotes spiritual and academic growth. The school has been recognized for its dedication to both academic excellence and the spiritual formation of its students, playing a crucial role in the parish's mission.[3]

The parish is known for its active community life, including various ministries that serve both the spiritual and physical needs of its parishioners and the broader Lancaster community. Saint Leo's hosts events like the annual parish picnic, supports religious education, and engages in social outreach, reflecting its commitment to service and evangelization.[4]

The parish also maintains a strong online presence, with live-streamed Masses and other resources available for those unable to attend in person, ensuring that the community remains connected regardless of physical constraints.[5]
