History
Prince of Peace Parish in Steelton, Pennsylvania, was established in 1995 through the merger of five Catholic parishes in the area: St. James, Assumption of the B.V.M, St. Ann, St. Peter, and St. John the Evangelist. This consolidation was part of a broader initiative by the Diocese of Harrisburg to better serve the changing demographics and to streamline resources in response to the declining number of priests and parishioners. The creation of Prince of Peace aimed to preserve the rich Catholic heritage of the community while fostering a unified congregation.[1]
The parish church is located at 815 South 2nd Street, previously the site of one of the merged parishes, St. Peter's. This location symbolizes the blending of different Catholic traditions into a single parish identity. Prince of Peace has since become a central point for religious activities in Steelton, offering Masses, sacraments, and community services.[2]
The parish is actively involved in community outreach, including food pantries, holiday bazaars, and various educational programs. The "Mary's Helpers" ministry, for instance, was initiated in 2008 to assist low-income families with food and clothing, demonstrating the parish's commitment to social justice and community welfare.[3]
Prince of Peace does not operate its own school but has a strong focus on religious education for all ages, ensuring the faith education of its community continues through various catechetical programs. The parish also engages in cultural preservation, celebrating the diverse backgrounds of its congregants, which include Polish, Italian, German, and other ethnic groups that once supported the individual parishes.[4]
