History
Our Lady of Hope Parish in Coal Township, Pennsylvania, was established in 1995 through the consolidation of St. Stephen and St. Joseph parishes. This unification was part of a broader initiative by the Diocese of Harrisburg to manage resources more effectively and to foster a stronger, unified Catholic presence in areas with declining or shifting populations. The merger marked a new beginning for the Catholic community on Coal Township's west side, bringing together diverse groups under one parish identity.[1]
The parish serves as a beacon of hope and light, named after the Marian title "Our Lady of Hope," symbolizing the community's aspirations for spiritual renewal. The church building on West Chestnut Street has become the center for worship, community service, and religious education for the local Catholic population. Franciscan Friars have been instrumental in the parish's spiritual leadership, bringing their tradition of joy, simplicity, and service to the community.[2]
Our Lady of Hope is committed to community outreach, offering services like a food pantry that provides meals and packaged goods to those in need. The parish also hosts various events, including a Christmas cookie sale, which not only brings the community together but also supports parish activities financially.[3]
The parish does not operate a school but focuses on religious education through its Religious Education program, catering to the catechetical needs of its members. Our Lady of Hope continues to be a vital part of the local religious landscape, offering Masses, sacraments, and community involvement opportunities, embodying the hope and faith it is named after.[4]
