History

The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in McSherrystown, Pennsylvania, has a deep-rooted history that dates back to the late 19th century. Around the turn of the century, McSherrystown's Catholic population was part of the largest parish in the colonies, Conewago. The growth in population, spurred by the cigar industry post-Civil War, led to the demand for a local church.[1]

In 1890, under the guidance of the Jesuits, the foundation for Holy Trinity Church was laid, which initially served the community. However, due to its insufficient size and location issues, the church was not seen as a permanent solution. Consequently, the Jesuits handed over the church to the Diocese of Harrisburg in 1901, and by 1903, Holy Trinity Church was dismantled.[2]

The current church structure was built in response to the need for a more central and larger place of worship for the growing Catholic community in McSherrystown. Over the years, the parish has seen various changes, including the appointment of different pastors and the establishment of associated schools which have since merged or closed.[3]

Today, Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish remains a vibrant part of McSherrystown, focusing on community service, spiritual guidance, and maintaining the rich Catholic heritage of the area.[4]
