Saint Rose of Lima (1586–1617), the first American-born saint, was a Peruvian laywoman known for extreme asceticism and charity to Lima’s poor. Canonized in 1671, she is the patroness of Latin America and the Philippines, influencing Peru’s 76% Catholic population (25 million). Her mystical visions and self-mortification embody South American devotional intensity.
