History

Saint Peter Parish in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, was established in 1845, serving the Catholic community in this part of Lancaster County. The parish's founding was part of the broader expansion of Catholicism in rural Pennsylvania, catering to the needs of German and Irish immigrants who settled in the region. The original church was built to accommodate these early settlers, providing a place for worship and religious activities.[1]

The current church structure, located at 904 Mill Road, was completed in 1967, reflecting the parish's growth and the need for more space. However, the parish maintains a historic church at One St. Peter Place, which was the original place of worship for many years. This historic church adds to the parish's rich heritage, offering a venue for smaller gatherings and preserving the architectural and spiritual legacy of the community.[2]

Saint Peter Parish is known for its vibrant community life, including the enthusiastic participation of its catechumens in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program, which even during the challenges of virtual classes during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, showed great enthusiasm and community spirit.[3]

The parish does not operate its own school but supports religious education through various programs aimed at all ages. Saint Peter is active in community service, hosts regular events like fish fries, and maintains a strong liturgical life with Masses at both the historic and the new church buildings.[4]

The parish has seen various clergy leadership, with each pastor contributing to the spiritual and communal development of Saint Peter. The parish also engages in outreach programs, reflecting its commitment to charity and community building.[5]
