History
Saint Katharine Drexel Parish in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, was established in 1988 in response to the growing Catholic population in the area. The parish was named after Saint Katharine Drexel, who was canonized in 2000 and known for her dedication to education and the welfare of Native American and African American communities. The founding of the parish coincided with her beatification, making it the first church in the world named in her honor.[1]
The parish's first Mass was celebrated on July 31, 1988, at the Silver Spring Fire Company, with Bishop William H. Keeler presiding. The land for the church was purchased, and the current church building was completed and dedicated on September 8, 1991, by Bishop Nicholas C. Dattilo. The architecture of the church reflects both reverence and community, aiming to provide a space for worship and fellowship.[2]
Saint Katharine Drexel Parish has been actively involved in community service, education, and outreach, reflecting the mission of its patron saint. Although it does not have its own school, the parish supports religious education through various programs, ensuring the faith is passed on to future generations. The parish has hosted numerous community events, including the Annual Pet Blessing, and engages in charitable activities like supporting seminarians and providing for those in need.[3]
The parish also maintains a strong liturgical life, offering regular Masses, devotions, and sacramental celebrations. It has a dedicated community center for various parish activities, from youth ministry to adult education, fostering a vibrant parish life. The Knights of Columbus Council 13100, based at Saint Katharine Drexel, has been recognized for its community service and charitable works.[4]
Saint Katharine Drexel Parish continues to be a beacon of faith in Mechanicsburg, focusing on spiritual growth, community service, and living out the Gospel in the spirit of its namesake.[5]
