History

Saint Joseph Parish in Dallastown, Pennsylvania, was established in 1853, serving the Catholic community in this part of York County. The parish's early days were marked by the efforts of Redemptorists from Baltimore and Jesuits from Conewago, who traveled to provide religious services to the area's Catholics. The first church was built in 1853, with Bishop John Neumann making a canonical visit in the same year, emphasizing the parish's significance in the burgeoning Catholic landscape of Pennsylvania.[1]

The parish has had several church buildings over the years, with the current structure being dedicated on April 1, 1963, by Bishop George Leech. This building replaced an earlier one that had served the community for over 80 years but was declared unsafe for public assembly in 1963. Between 1963 and 1975, Masses were held in the school auditorium due to the church's structural issues until the new church was completed.[2]

Saint Joseph Parish has a rich history of educational commitment, with schools established in 1896 and later in 1961. However, the parish school closed in 2019 as part of a broader diocesan initiative to consolidate educational resources. Despite this, the parish continues to provide religious education through programs aimed at nurturing faith among its youth and adults.[3]

The parish is known for its community involvement, including the Year of St. Joseph in 2021, which highlighted the spiritual significance of its patron saint through special events and celebrations. Saint Joseph Parish also engages in various ministries and social outreach programs, reflecting the community's dedication to service and faith.[4]

The parish has also faced challenges, including dealing with allegations of abuse by clergy previously associated with the parish. These incidents are part of a broader issue the Diocese of Harrisburg has addressed, ensuring transparency and support for victims.[5]
