History

Saint James Parish in Lititz, Pennsylvania, was established in 1919 to serve the Catholic community in this part of Lancaster County. The parish's history began when Father William White, a Redemptorist missionary, recognized the need for a Catholic presence in Lititz due to the sparse attendance at Masses in neighboring Lancaster. The first Mass was celebrated on April 4, 1920, in what was previously the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, which had been purchased for $2,850 at a public auction on November 18, 1919.[1]

Over the years, Saint James Parish has seen significant growth and transformation. The original church building served the community until the dedication of a new church on Woodcrest Avenue on October 14, 1978, by Bishop Joseph T. Daley. This move allowed for more space and facilities to serve an expanding congregation. The parish has been under the care of the Redemptorist Fathers until 2022, when they withdrew from pastoral care due to a shortage of vocations, and the parish transitioned to diocesan priests.[2]

The parish has been known for its community engagement, hosting events like the Parish Midwinter Meal and the Adult Day of Reflection, which are integral to parish life. Saint James also focuses on Eucharistic devotion, with regular Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, reflecting the spiritual heritage of the Redemptorists.[3]

Although Saint James does not have an associated school, it offers religious education through various programs, ensuring the faith is passed on to future generations. The parish has seen numerous priests serve as pastors, each contributing to its spiritual and communal life. After the Redemptorists' departure, Father Ryan M. Fischer became the pastor, continuing to lead the parish in its mission of worship and service.[4]

Saint James Parish remains a vibrant part of Lititz's religious community, committed to spreading the Gospel, supporting the faithful, and engaging in community outreach.[5]
