History

Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Quarryville, Pennsylvania, was originally established in 1857 when Bishop John Neumann, later canonized as a saint, rededicated a chapel in Dry Wells as St. Catherine Church. This initial church served the Catholic community in the area until it was abandoned and later razed in 1933. The parish has a rich history tied to the early Catholic missions in southeastern Pennsylvania, particularly with the influence of Irish and German immigrants who settled in the region.[1]

From 1869 to 1879, Quarryville was considered a mission of St. Mary's Church in Lancaster, and from 1879 to 1881, it was a mission of St. Anthony's Church, also in Lancaster. The current church was built in 1896 when Rev. Jeremiah Looney purchased land to establish a more permanent presence in the community. The new church was dedicated by Bishop Thomas McGovern in November of that year, with a cost of approximately $4,400, reflecting the parish's growth and commitment to serving its congregation.[2]

In the 1990s, due to the parish outgrowing its original space and the need for accessibility, Bishop Nicholas C. Dattilo and Rev. Joseph C. Coyne undertook the project to build a new church on Robert Fulton Highway. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated in July 1999, marking a significant milestone in the parish's history. This move allowed for expanded facilities and a more contemporary worship space.[3]

Saint Catherine of Siena Parish does not have a school but engages in religious education, offering programs to both children and adults. The parish is known for its community involvement, including various ministries, social events, and outreach programs. It also maintains a strong spiritual life, with regular Masses, devotions, and a commitment to the teachings and example of Saint Catherine of Siena, who is celebrated for her spiritual writings and her role in Church reform.[4]

The parish celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2019, reflecting on its enduring legacy and the generations of faithful who have passed on the faith. Bishop Ronald Gainer officiated the anniversary Mass, highlighting the perseverance and hard work of the parish community over the years.[5]
