History

Saint Bernard Parish in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, was established in 1947, initially as a mission church in this small Perry County town. The parish was named after Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, reflecting the community's devotion to this saint known for his contributions to theology and monastic life. Over time, the mission grew to become an independent parish within the Diocese of Harrisburg, marking a significant religious and community development in the area.[1]

The parish's growth led to the construction of a new church building dedicated in 2003 on a 20-acre property outside the town center, which allowed for expanded facilities including a rectory, education center, parish hall, and garage. This move symbolized not only the growth in numbers but also the community's commitment to nurturing faith and fostering a vibrant parish life.[2]

Saint Bernard Parish has been under the leadership of various pastors, with Father Robert F. Sharman serving a significant tenure, celebrating his 25th anniversary as pastor in 2023. His leadership has been pivotal in guiding the parish through its milestones, including its 75th anniversary in the same year, which highlighted the community's history, achievements, and the vocations it has fostered.[3]

The parish does not operate its own school but focuses on religious education and community service, providing programs for spiritual growth across all ages. Saint Bernard is known for its community involvement, including hosting various events and activities that strengthen parishioner bonds and outreach efforts to the local community.[4]

The parish's history is also marked by its contributions to religious vocations, with several priests, deacons, and religious sisters originating from its congregation, underlining the parish's impact on the broader Catholic Church.[5]
