History

Saint Benedict the Abbot Parish in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, was established in 1995 as part of a reorganization by Bishop Nicholas Dattilo of the Diocese of Harrisburg. The parish was created by merging SS. Cyril & Methodius and Our Lady of Guadalupe, making it the only bilingual (Spanish-English) Catholic church in Lebanon County at the time. This consolidation aimed to address the changing demographics and the need for a more sustainable parish structure for the Catholic community in Lebanon.[1]

The parish is located on Lehman Street and serves both English and Spanish-speaking parishioners, reflecting the diverse linguistic and cultural makeup of the local Catholic community. Saint Benedict the Abbot focuses on fostering a faith-filled community where spiritual growth, Catholic education, and community service are prioritized.[2]

Saint Benedict the Abbot does not have its own school but offers religious education programs to ensure the faith is passed on to future generations. The parish engages in various community activities, including the Disciple Maker Index (DMI) survey, aimed at understanding and enhancing parishioners' discipleship and engagement.[3]

The parish's mission is to bring people together as the Body of Christ, promoting Christian service and deepening personal relationships with God. This is reflected in their community involvement, such as food drives, support for local charities, and cultural events celebrating both the English and Hispanic heritages within the parish.[4]

The history of Saint Benedict the Abbot also ties back to the broader Catholic history in Lebanon, including the Slovak immigration that influenced the establishment of earlier churches in the area. This parish continues to be a vital part of Lebanon's religious community, offering a place for worship, community, and cultural expression.[5]
