History

Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was established in 1900 to serve the Catholic community in the western part of Lancaster. The parish's creation was part of a response to the growing Catholic population in Lancaster, particularly with the expansion of industrial and residential areas. The first pastor, Father John Kealy, oversaw the construction of the initial church building, which was completed in 1902. This building served as both the church and school until the current church was built in 1952.[1]

The current church, an impressive limestone structure, reflects the English Perpendicular Gothic style or "Lancastrian Gothic," celebrating the parish's commitment to architectural beauty alongside its spiritual mission. The cornerstone for this building was laid in 1952, and it was dedicated in 1953, symbolizing the parish's growth and the community's devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.[2]

Sacred Heart School was established alongside the parish, providing Catholic education from preschool through eighth grade. The school has been a vital part of the parish, focusing on both academic excellence and spiritual formation, contributing significantly to the community's educational landscape.[3]

The parish is known for its community involvement, hosting various events like the annual parish festival, which brings together parishioners and the broader Lancaster community. Sacred Heart of Jesus also offers a range of ministries, from religious education to social justice initiatives, embodying the teachings of the Sacred Heart in action.[4]

The parish has also been a site for significant religious events, including hosting relics of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, which attracted many for veneration, underlining the parish's deep connection to the devotion of the Sacred Heart.[5]
