The Implementing Agreement on Environmental, Safety and Economic Aspects of Fusion Power has several areas of interest which include assessment of environmental impact and safety issues of fusion power, assessment of the cost of fusion energy and possible role in future energy scenarios.

The work program includes developing databases for use in safety and environmental evaluations, comparing methodologies used in Europe, Japan and the United States for safety and environmental analyses and achieving consistency and accuracy, development and validation of models for environmental and safety analysis. Computer models are validate against results of experiments conducted under the Agreement framework.

Computer codes for dose calculations of activation products are also compared and discrepancies identified. A computerized Failure Rate database has been developed. Component failure rates are used to predict maintenance schedules, and are key elements in any safety analysis for fusion reactors. The Implementing Agreement also develops economic evaluations of the cost of fusion energy based on reactor system studies, produces projections on possible role of fusion power in future energy market, and advices national research programs and the IEA on such matters.
