History
St. John Neumann Parish in Charlotte, North Carolina, was established in 1977 to serve the growing Catholic population in the eastern part of the city. The parish’s first structure, consisting of a sanctuary, six classrooms, and a small hall, was dedicated by Bishop Michael J. Begley on June 17, 1979. Initially led by Monsignor John P. Newman until his death in 1981, the parish grew under subsequent pastors, including Father Francis O’Rourke. By 1984, with the congregation expanding to 800 families, a new sanctuary and additional facilities were constructed and dedicated by Bishop John F. Donoghue on June 23, 1985. The parish transitioned from being served by Augustinian Friars to diocesan clergy in 2009, with Father Patrick Hoare taking over as pastor, followed by Father John Starczewski in 2017. The parish celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007 with a Founders and Family Dinner Dance, marking its growth to over 1,700 families by the early 2000s. Today, it continues to thrive as a diverse community with a strong emphasis on multilingual worship and faith formation.
