History

Saint Joseph Parish in Milton, Pennsylvania, was established in 1869, serving the Catholic community in this part of Northumberland County. The parish's history is deeply intertwined with the early Catholic missions in the region, which began with priests like Father John Neumann, who later became a saint. Initially, the Catholic population in Milton was served by priests from Danville, until the parish was officially formed with the construction of its first church in 1868, dedicated on July 25, 1869, by Bishop Jeremiah F. Shanahan.[1]

The parish has a rich history marked by several significant events. Father Thomas McGovern, who served as pastor from 1873 to 1888, later became the second Bishop of Harrisburg. In 1888, the parish acquired land for a new cemetery, replacing an earlier one on Welsh Hill. The church also converted into a four-room school by 1890, staffed by the Sisters of Mercy and later by the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary from Scranton, until a new school was built in 1961.[2]

Saint Joseph Parish has been a focal point for Catholic life in Milton, with the church building reflecting the community's faith through its architecture and services. The parish no longer operates its own school, but it continues to provide religious education through various programs aimed at both youth and adults.[3]

The parish is known for its community involvement, including the Council of Catholic Women, which has been active in social and service activities. Saint Joseph also hosts various events, such as the annual Diocesan Catechetical Conference, and participates in local community service efforts.[4]

In 2021, the parish was featured during the Year of St. Joseph, highlighting its commitment to the spiritual life and service in the spirit of its patron saint. Saint Joseph Parish continues to be an active part of Milton's religious landscape, offering Masses, sacraments, and community support.[5]
