History

Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was established in 1906 to serve the growing Italian Catholic population in the area. The parish was founded through the efforts of the Italian community, which had begun to gather for Mass at various temporary locations before a permanent church was built. The original church was dedicated in 1907, reflecting the architectural styles of the early 20th century and serving as a cultural and spiritual center for Italian immigrants.[1]

The current church building at 501 East Orange Street was constructed to accommodate the expanding congregation, symbolizing the parish's growth and commitment to serving the local Catholic community. Over the decades, Saint Anthony of Padua has been a place where the faith, culture, and traditions of Italian Catholicism are celebrated, particularly through annual feasts in honor of Saint Anthony.[2]

The parish has also been known for its involvement in education, with Saint Anthony's Catholic School serving the community until it was part of a consolidation in 1991 that formed Resurrection Catholic School. This new school continues to operate, providing Catholic education in Lancaster, although no longer under direct parish management.[3]

Saint Anthony of Padua is deeply committed to community service, with ministries that include food distribution, support for the homeless, and various outreach programs. The parish maintains a strong connection to its Italian heritage while welcoming a diverse congregation, offering Masses that celebrate both the traditional and contemporary aspects of Catholic worship.[4]

The parish has faced pastoral changes, with Reverend Matthew C. Morelli being appointed as pastor in 2020, signaling new leadership to guide the parish's mission and community engagement in the Diocese of Harrisburg.[5]
